Tina Olmstead is a Teacher of the Deaf and Certified Auditory-Verbal Therapist. She
studied and taught with Dr. Daniel Ling at McGill University and for the past 25 years
has worked as an itinerant teacher of the deaf in Ottawa, Ontario. She provides
Auditory-Verbal intervention to students of all ages and consults with regular classroom
teachers. She also lectures internationally, mentors and consults with others interested
in Auditory-Verbal therapy. In 2003, she received Auditory-Verbal
International’s President’s Award for Outstanding Service and Dedication.  Tina is an
AVI  lifetime member and a member of AG Bell.

Gerri A. Hanna is presently the Senior Executive Director of Advocacy and Policy for
Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.   Ms. Hanna is a
graduate of St. Louis University with a Masters in Communication Disorders and a Juris
Doctor.   In addition, Ms. Hanna earned a Master’s degree in Early Childhood Special
Education – Birth to Five from the University of Pittsburgh.
Presentation description:

This one day workshop is designed for professionals, parents and university students
working in regular classrooms with children who are deaf and hard of hearing. The day
will focus on planning and devising programs to meet the needs of individual students
and linking those goals to life in regular classroom settings. Practical strategies and
techniques for developing listening, speech and language skills  will be shared.

Learner objectives:

Participants will:

-be able to identify goals for individual therapy sessions
-plan individual auditory-verbal therapy session
-link the goals of the individual session to goals of a regular classroom
-evaluate the relationship between individual therapy sessions and classroom settings
-select appropriate strategies
-use auditory-verbal techniques
-incorporate listening skills as part of the daily routine for  children who are deaf and
hard of hearing
The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act(IDEA) reauthorization was signed into
law by President Bush on December 3, 2004.
Ms. Hanna will focus on significant
changes that occurred in this landmark civil rights legislation that hallmarks a free
appropriate public education for children with hearing loss. Ms. Hanna will speak to AG
Bell's Federal advocacy initiatives and how these efforts will benefit the educational
needs of our children in reaching full potential and independence in the mainstream of
society.
