ONE MINUTE WITH ...

              Lisa Weiss

Name:  Lisa Weiss (not Tucker)

Occupation: I’m a stay-at-home (or car) mom now and I was a litigator in
New York before I had kids.

Address:  South Orange, New Jersey, but I was born and raised in
Colorado

Age: mid-30s

Family: Terence (husband), five year old twins Max (auditory neuropathy) and
Cole, and two year old Heath

Community activities: Mostly things involving my kids and the deaf and hard
of hearing community.

Hobbies:  Tennis is the only hobby I have time for anymore outside of my
kids.  I also love to read and go to the movies, but I don’t get to do those
things as much as I would like.

Self-Portrait:  As far as my physical appearance, people always say that I look
like a librarian or a schoolteacher, whatever that means.  People who know me
probably don’t realize this, but I am actually an extremely shy person who has
forced herself to become more outgoing.  I pretty much had my nose stuck in
a book or was playing tennis throughout my entire childhood.  Once I’ve gotten
to know someone, I have a pretty quick sense of humor.  I care a lot about
people, which oftentimes gets me in trouble because I tend to overextend
myself trying to help everyone I meet.

Motto:    Anything that doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.

Greatest accomplishment:  Raising very nice kids and passing the New York
State Bar Exam on the first try.  I don’t think anyone except my husband
thought I could do either of those things.

Bad habits:  Practicing law made me a terrible procrastinator, which has
carried over into all parts of my life.  It also gave me the terrible habit of not
calling people back promptly.

Favorite TV show:  House, Dexter, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and The New
Adventures of Old Christine

Favorite food:  I love Mexican food, but there isn’t a lot of good Mexican food
back East.

Best childhood memory:  My best childhood memories involve going to
Wyoming with my mom’s side of the family (that’s where my mother grew up)
– we had a cabin and used to go snowmobiling, fishing, hiking, four-wheeling,
and waterskiing.  We had a great time on those trips.

People don’t know that I:   I was a tennis pro in Colorado before I moved to
New York.  My decision was between moving to Las Vegas to become a
blackjack dealer and moving to New York to go to law school.  Law school won
because I don’t have a high tolerance for second hand smoke.  Seriously.

Last Book I read: A Woman In Charge by Carl Bernstein.  I highly
recommend it.

The biggest asset in the local deaf and hard of hearing communities:    I
find talking with other families of deaf and hard of hearing children is the most
helpful to me.  Parents who have gone through the struggles with their children
can really serve as sounding boards for all of us with younger children.  I wish I
could connect with more of those people.

The biggest problem in the local deaf and hard of hearing communities:
As far as the education of children, I think it’s shortsighted that options other
than oral and sign are rarely explored.  We use cued speech with Max at home
and at school.  I wish more people would explore cued speech as an option for
their families.  I hate to see the divide between the signing and oral
communities.

If I had more time I would:  I will eventually practice law again and help
people advocate for their children.  I wish I had more time now.  There are so
many other things I would like to do, I can’t even begin to list them.
